NLSA provides a variety of educational opportunities to both the public and social service agencies. We regularly respond to requests to discuss not only the legal services which we provide, but also the law on the variety of legal issues in which we practice. Generally, requests for legal education events can be made by mail or by telephone to the county office where the event will occur. Topics include the following:
- Family Law: Domestic Violence, support, divorce, custody, visitation, and partial custody.
- Employment Law: unemployment compensation, wage claims, expungements, pardons, Family and Medical Leave Act, at-will employment, unfounded child abuse allegations, and discrimination.
- Public Benefits: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Medicaid, Food Stamps, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), General Assistance (GA), Low Income Heating Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Homeowner’s Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (HEMAP), and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
- Consumer Law: bankruptcy, unfair debt collection, sheriff sale of personal goods, judgment executions, termination of utilities, predatory lending, tax sales, and mortgage foreclosure.
- Housing Law: landlord tenant evictions and lockouts, public housing or Section 8 housing admission denials, warranty of habitability issues, security deposits, and fair housing discrimination.
- Elder Law: Advance Directives including Powers of Attorney and Living Wills.
