Message from the Executive Director

Robert V. Racunas, Esq.

Dear Friend,

Welcome!  Neighborhood Legal Services Association (NLSA) is the primary provider of free civil legal services for our low-income citizens in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler and Lawrence Counties. We envision that equal access to justice for those who have nowhere else to turn, where every low-income individual and family in Southwestern Pennsylvania will have access to the full range of civil legal services and legal remedies available to them regardless of their availability to pay.

NLSA helps our clients with a wide variety of civil legal problems, especially those of an emergency nature. We also work with our clients to improve their ability to be self-sufficient through obtaining and/or enforcing their right to necessary economic, employment, housing, medical and other public resources. We provide these services through high quality representation, partnerships with the private bar and other local public and private agencies, and a comprehensive program of community education and outreach throughout the region.

On this website, you will find information about NLSA, our work, including the kinds of cases we handle, and how to get in touch with us if you need help. You will also find the stories of some of our clients. More than anything else, these stories illustrate the work that NLSA attorneys do every day to make the dream of access to justice a reality for the poor and vulnerable in our community.  Our substantive news section and video gallery offers vital information on common legal problems faced by low-income families as well as advice and resources needed to address these issues.

We would love to have you help us as we work to ensure that NLSA has the resources it needs to provide civil legal services for the poor, for whom access to lawyers can mean the difference between total ruin and food, shelter, jobs and health care. There are many ways that you can add your voice, your time, and your money to help those who have nowhere else to turn for help have access to legal services in civil legal matters.  Just click the How You Can Help button to find out how to partner with NLSA to ensure that justice is available to all, regardless of income.

The work conducted by NLSA attorneys and pro bono volunteers is an integral part of this nation’s system, the very foundation of our democracy. Yet we are reminded every day that the gap between the rhetorical promise of equality and justice and the reality for the clients walking into our offices is huge and glaring. We invite you to help make equal access to justice a reality in our community!

Sincerely,

Robert V. Racunas, Esq.
